Common questions and answers

Do I need an API key to use the plugin?

No, the API key is optional. You can translate manually or use Translation Memory without any AI provider. However, for AI-powered translations, you'll need an API key from one of the supported providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google, or Kimi).

Which AI provider should I choose?

All providers offer excellent translation quality. OpenAI GPT-4o and Anthropic Claude are recommended for best quality. DeepSeek offers great value. Google Gemini is fast and affordable. Kimi/Moonshot excels with Asian languages. You can test each provider and switch anytime.

How does Translation Memory work?

Translation Memory automatically stores every translation you make. When you encounter similar or identical strings, the plugin suggests existing translations with a match percentage. 100% matches can be auto-applied, while fuzzy matches (configurable threshold) are shown as suggestions.

Can I use the Glossary with AI translation?

Yes! The Glossary integrates with AI translation. When AI translates strings, it considers your glossary terms to ensure consistent terminology. The QA system also validates that glossary terms are translated correctly.

Will my translations survive plugin updates?

Yes, if you save to the System location (/wp-content/languages/). This is the WordPress default and recommended approach. Author location stores files inside the plugin folder, which may be overwritten on updates.

Can I translate my own custom plugins?

Absolutely! The plugin works with any WordPress plugin or theme that uses standard gettext functions (__(), _e(), _x(), _n(), etc.). Just ensure your plugin has a Text Domain defined in its header.

What happens if AI translation fails?

The plugin handles errors gracefully. Failed translations are skipped, and you'll see an error message. You can retry failed strings individually or in batch. Your existing translations are never affected by API errors.

Can I import existing translations?

Yes! You can import existing PO files, Translation Memory (TMX format), and Glossaries (CSV, TBX). The plugin also syncs with POT template files to add new strings while preserving existing translations.
